Dust explosion protection in Europe

Water fire extinguishing systems

Producer: T&B electronic

In areas where there is a high risk of product fires, the rate of fire spread is significantly increased due to the possible transfer of flames and ignition sources via conveyor belts to other production areas. For such high-risk areas, a combination of fire alarms and water extinguishing systems is used.

Description

Depending on local conditions and the level of fire hazard, fire detection is usually carried out using flame, smoke or heat detectors. Electric and pneumatic heat detectors can be used for this purpose:

  • Flame detector for the detection of open flames;
  • Smoke detector for smouldering fire detection;
  • Thermal imaging camera with swivelling head for automatic monitoring of large areas;
  • Pneumatic starting elements for triggering in the event of a sudden temperature rise.

Infrared thermal imaging cameras play an important role in locating the fire and automatically starting the appropriate extinguishing system that uses water spray.

To avoid false alarms, the alarm temperature should be set approximately 30°C above the maximum ambient temperature. This ensures accurate fire detection while minimising the possibility of the system being triggered by environmental factors.

The maximum area monitored by a single detector is always defined in accordance with the VdS 2095 directive.

Water spray extinguishing systems, working in conjunction with the detection systems described above, detect fires particularly quickly and distribute water evenly to all nozzles in the extinguishing zone. This quickly cools the burning material and removes heat from the surrounding air. In this way, the systems make it possible to extinguish fires quickly and safely, even in critical areas, preventing them from spreading.

In addition, electrically driven water extinguishing systems can be closed early, allowing the water supply to be quickly shut off once the extinguishment is complete, ensuring efficient and economical use of resources.

Advantages

  1. Quick and safe prevention of fire initiation and spread, even in critical areas;
  2. The water spray fire extinguishing system can always be manually actuated;
  3. The extinguishing water flow rate is selected depending on the object to be protected in accordance with VdS 2109;
  4. A range of extinguishing nozzles are available for a variety of applications.
Technical information

Water fire extinguishing systems can be installed for both facility protection and room protection. With systems for object protection, the extinguishing nozzles are directed directly at the object to be protected, whereas in room protection systems they are evenly distributed over the entire protected area. In the case of room protection systems, the protected area can be divided into different extinguishing zones for sequential extinguishing.

Extinguishing water is sprayed into the extinguishing zone through nozzles to help extinguish and cool the burning material, ensuring the fire is extinguished effectively and quickly.

Premises protection is essential:

  1. In combined production and storage facilities;
  2. Facility protection is installed for individual machining centres where it is necessary to prevent the spread of fire to other areas.

The protected areas of a building or facility are equipped with a network of pipelines with open extinguishing valves, which are divided into several extinguishing zones. In standby mode, extinguishing water is supplied to the valve stations. The detection of the fire takes place thanks to electric or pneumatic starting elements adapted to the risk and environmental conditions.

The water is supplied via a tank and a powerful pump. As soon as the system detects a fire in the area to be protected, the corresponding valve of the extinguishing system is triggered and opens. The extinguishing water is sprayed through nozzles only in the extinguishing zone, extinguishing the flame and cooling the burning material.

Immediately after extinguishing a fire, the water spray system is ready for use again. Installing these systems will ensure your company is protected from the devastating effects of a fire, including long periods of downtime.

We offer the installation of spark arresting systems to protect conveyor lines and filters from dust explosions, as well as gas fire suppression systems to protect facilities.

We are ready to develop a customised protection concept for you. A well-designed fire protection concept will signal reliability and safety to your customers.
